Earlier this year, I completed a family history book, The O'Connell & Fealy families of Sliabh Luachra. Sliabh Luachra is that area in Ireland where Cork, Kerry and Limerick converge. These families intermarried at least three times, both in Ireland and here in the US. Some family members settled in Ohio and Massachussetts, but most settled here in the Washington - Baltimore area.
It also appears that at least some went to Missouri and Kansas. Among them were Dave Leahy, a prominent Kansas newspaperman and Sister Eugenia Fealy, Daughters of Charity, First Visitatrix (Equivelant to Mother Superior) of the Western Province of that order who died in Normandy, MO, in 1932. Her nephew, prominent U.S. Army chaplain Ignatius Fealy (see http://www.milarch.org/history/index.html), was born July 31, 1878 in Osage County, MO, apparently while his parents, who were from the DC area, were visiting other family members. Father Ignatius performed my grandparents wedding here in 1916, and after retiring from the chaplains' corps was the pastor of St. Agnes Church in Woodlawn, MD, near Baltimore, until his death in 1942.
I also know of another relative, Edmond Dore (like Dave Leahy, his mother was a Fealy) who settled in Kansas City around 1900. I have contacted some of Dave Leahy's descendants in Witchita, KS and in FL, but am still trying to track down other family members who may still live in the midwest. |
